Senior Members (Administrative) Outline Strategies to Achieve SDG Goals at 9th Summer School
As part of efforts to build capacity of staff of the Registrars Offices at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Quality Assurance and Planning Unit with its partners has organised the 9th Summer School for all staff and selected affiliate institutions.
This year’s Summer School themed ‘‘SDGs and Universities: Actions Towards KNUST’s Mandate at 70 and Beyond’ was to enhance staff knowledge in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to improve the quality of work in the promotion of higher education in Ghana.
Mr Dotun Osiyemi of Doterry Consulting Ltd who facilitated the Senior Members (Administrative) sessions held at the Gardiner Conference room, presented on ‘How Our Roles and Actions as Administrators/Unit Align with the SDGs, and How we could do More to Contribute to Them’.
The objective of the SDGs, he said, are to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that people live in peace and prosperity. To this end, he proposed that the SDGs should be considered as values and not just goals, printed and placed at strategic points in the University. He also suggested that the SDGs should be incorporated in the curriculum as a compulsory course for freshmen.
The Registrar of C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo, Dr. Vincent Ankamah Lomotey presenting on ‘the strengths, gaps and opportunities needed as a College/Unit’ noted that KNUST has the expertise, goodwill and capacity to contribute to achieving the SDGs. According to Dr Lomotey, promoting SDGs through teaching, research and community impact programs, aligning the curriculum with the SDG, involving local partners in research, seeking available opportunities for partnerships, among others are measures administrators should incorporate towards achieving the SDGs.
In the break-out session, participants from the Registrar’s Offices identified the gaps and opportunities, and prioritised and outlined the strategies towards the attainment of the SDG goals. They further elaborated on how their respective offices have contributed achieving the SDGs.
