The Registrar's Profile

Mr. Benjamin Boampong Owusu is a seasoned higher education administrator and legal practitioner with over two decades of progressive leadership experience in university governance, administration, and human resource management. He possesses deep expertise in institutional policy development, regulatory compliance, and academic service delivery. Mr. Owusu is widely recognised for his strong institutional memory, integrity, and collaborative leadership across local and national academic platforms. He is resourceful, meticulous, and proactive, with exceptional problem-solving abilities and a proven capacity to translate governance frameworks into forward-thinking administrative practices.
Mr. Owusu began his career at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, in September 2001 as a Senior Administrative Assistant, and was promoted to Principal Administrative Assistant in 2007. His commitment to administrative excellence earned him appointment as Assistant Registrar in April 2010. Following a brief orientation, he was posted to the College of Engineering in August 2010, where he served as Assistant College Registrar. In March 2015, he was transferred to the Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) to provide additional administrative support in response to a significant increase in student enrolment and administrative workload.
Later that same year, he joined the Human Resource Development Division, where he served in several key capacities. From September 2015 to August 2017, he worked as Assistant Registrar in charge of the Junior Staff Schedule, and following his promotion to Senior Assistant Registrar in August 2017, he took on responsibility for the Senior Staff Schedule. In March 2018, he was appointed Schedule Officer for Senior Members, a role he continued to perform with distinction. His dedication, professionalism, and exemplary leadership culminated in his promotion to Deputy Registrar on August 1, 2022, and ultimately, his appointment as Registrar of the University on August 1, 2025.
Throughout his career, Mr. Owusu has played an active role in university governance and committee leadership. He has served as Recorder, Secretary, and Member on several key statutory and ad hoc committees, including the University Appointments and Promotions Committee (UAPC), Administrative Appointments and Promotions Committee (AAPC), College Board, and College Appointments and Promotions Sub-Committee. He has also served as Secretary to various University Council Search Committees, both within and beyond KNUST, and is currently Secretary to the University Council.
A recognised expert in research ethics, Mr. Owusu spearheaded the establishment and management of the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee (HuSSREC) within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Under his leadership, the Committee has strengthened ethical oversight in research, ensuring compliance with international standards and fostering a culture of academic integrity.
Mr. Owusu is an avid scholar and write who has authored influential memoranda and published works on higher education governance and institutional administration. He has also contributed meaningfully to the University Statutes Review Process through the preparation of detailed memoranda and policy submissions, reflecting his commitment to good governance and institutional excellence. In addition to his administrative duties, Mr. Owusu lectures on a part-time basis at KNUST’s Faculty of Educational Studies and School of Business, teaching courses such as Legal Issues in Educational Administration and Business Law and Ethics.
Mr. Owusu holds a Bachelor of Education in Psychology and a Master of Education in Educational Administration from the University of Cape Coast, as well as Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Master of Laws (LLM) degrees from KNUST. He also holds a Barrister-at-Law qualification from the Ghana School of Law and has represented clients in both civil and criminal matters before courts of competent jurisdiction.
Beyond KNUST, he has served as a Member of the Statutes Review Committee of Koforidua Technical University and other several committees, contributing his expertise to higher education governance reforms.
Mr. Owusu is a member of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), a member in good standing of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), and a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
